Collagen has become one of those words that seems to mean everything.
Skin. Hair. Joints. Ageing. Recovery. Beauty. Wellness.
Spend ten minutes looking at collagen supplements and you could reasonably come away thinking that one protein has acquired rather a lot of responsibilities.
The biology is both more interesting and less dramatic.
Understanding what collagen actually is, and what happens when you drink it, makes it considerably easier to judge the products built around it.
First: collagen is a protein
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body.
It forms part of the structural framework of skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and other connective tissues. There are different types of collagen in the body, performing somewhat different structural roles.
In other words, collagen is not an exotic wellness ingredient invented by the supplement industry.
Your body already contains a great deal of it.
And your body makes collagen itself.
That production changes naturally as we get older. This is normal biology rather than something that needs to be treated as a problem.
It is also where much of the modern collagen category begins.
Then why drink collagen?
This is where an important distinction is often lost.
Drinking collagen does not mean that the collagen simply travels from the bottle to your skin.
Digestion does not work like that.
Collagen is a protein. Like other dietary proteins, it is broken down during digestion into smaller components that the body can process and use.
Most collagen supplements therefore use hydrolysed collagen.
Hydrolysis means that the collagen has already been broken into smaller fragments, commonly called collagen peptides.
That is why you will see words such as hydrolysed collagen, collagen hydrolysate and collagen peptides appearing on supplement labels.
They are describing the form of the protein rather than promising what it will subsequently do.
The number on the front matters
Once you understand that collagen is simply a protein being consumed, one of the more useful questions becomes remarkably mundane:
How much collagen is actually in the serving?
Collagen products can come as powders, capsules, liquids, sachets, gummies and ready-to-drink shots. The packaging can make them look broadly comparable even when the amount being consumed is quite different.
This is why we prefer looking at the dose rather than the adjectives.
One daily 30 ml bottle of Collibre Gold contains 10 g, or 10,000 mg, of hydrolysed bovine collagen.
There is no reason to make 10,000 mg sound more mysterious than it is.
It is 10 grams of collagen.
That is the useful number.
Bovine, marine and the question of source
Collagen supplements can also come from different animal sources.
Marine collagen generally comes from fish. Bovine collagen comes from cattle. Other sources exist too.
Collibre Gold uses hydrolysed bovine collagen sourced in Germany.
We think provenance matters because when something becomes part of a daily routine, knowing what it is and where it comes from should not require detective work.
But source alone should not be mistaken for a benefit claim.
The sensible questions remain fairly simple:
What type of collagen is it?
How much are you taking?
Where does it come from?
What else is in the product?
And will you realistically keep taking it?
Collagen is only part of the Collibre bottle
This matters particularly with Collibre because Gold is not simply collagen dissolved in water.
Each 30 ml shot contains 10 g of hydrolysed bovine collagen alongside twelve vitamins, including vitamins A, C, D and E and a range of B vitamins.
The base is made with apple and lemon juice, the product is pasteurised and peach flavoured, and no preservatives are added.
The distinction between the collagen and the vitamins is important.
In the UK, there are currently no authorised health claims for collagen itself.
There are, however, authorised claims for particular vitamins when they are present at the required levels.
For example, Collibre provides 80 mg of vitamin C per shot - 100% of the Nutrient Reference Value.
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and cartilage.
That wording may sound rather less exciting than some supplement advertising.
That is precisely why we use it.
It is an authorised claim rather than a marketing invention.

So, does taking collagen work?
This is usually the question hiding behind “what does collagen do?”
And it deserves a slightly frustrating answer.
There is a growing body of research into collagen supplementation. Some findings are encouraging. The evidence base is also still developing, individual studies vary considerably in size and methodology, and regulators have not authorised health claims for collagen itself.
That leaves a gap between scientific interest and the certainty sometimes implied by supplement marketing.
We would rather leave the gap visible.
A supplement company does not become more credible by turning an interesting study into a guaranteed personal outcome.
Collibre cannot tell you what taking collagen will do for you.
Neither should anyone else.
Perhaps the better question is whether it fits your routine
Supplements tend to be discussed as though choosing the correct ingredient were the entire decision.
There is another part that receives rather less attention.
You have to take it.
Regularly.
A theoretically perfect supplement sitting at the back of a cupboard is not a particularly useful one.
This is one reason we chose a small ready-to-drink bottle rather than creating another powder to measure or sachet to mix.
Shake it. Open it. Drink it.
The entire thing takes perhaps ten seconds.
There is no complicated protocol around Collibre either. The recommended daily intake is simply one 30 ml bottle per day.
Morning or evening matters rather less to us than finding a moment that is easy to repeat.
What we would look for in any collagen product
If you are comparing collagen supplements, ignore the front of the packaging for a moment.
Turn the product around.
Look for the amount of collagen per daily serving.
Look at the source.
Check what else has been added.
Read the nutrition panel rather than relying on the largest words on the box.
And be particularly cautious when a product promises a very specific physical result.
The supplement category is full of impressive language.
The label is usually more informative.
The honest answer
So what does collagen actually do?
Inside the body, collagen is an important structural protein.
Inside a bottle, hydrolysed collagen is a source of protein fragments that will be processed through digestion like other proteins.
What happens beyond that is where biology, nutrition and a still-developing field of research meet, and where responsible brands need to become considerably more careful with their language.
That may be a less satisfying answer than a list of seven miraculous benefits.
We think it is a more useful one.
And if you decide collagen belongs in your routine, choose the product whose dose, ingredients, provenance and format make sense to you.
